Abstract

A multi-layered model is developed for the prediction of mud transport in an estuary and ports to take into account the effects of submerged dikes and to reproduce the vertical distribution of suspended mud concentrations. A most remarkable result in the field observation in Kumamoto Port was the effect of a submerged dike on reducing the amount of deposition rate within the test trench. It is predicted from the calculation that submerged dikes 1 m in height from the bottom will prevent siltation in the access channel and anchorages of Kumamoto Port by about 30% of the total deposition without submerged dikes.
