Abstract

A model is presented for the dynamics of the mobile layer of sediment on the sea bed under sheetflow conditions. The Karman-Polhausen method is used to determine the thickness of the mobile layer, the scaling for velocity phase and amplitude, and the phase lead of the velocity at the bottom of the mobile layer. The model does not make use of constitutive equations such as those suggested by Bagnold (1956). Agreement between the predictions of the model and existing laboratory measurements is good.
